As part of the Congress, UWW referee-instructor and 1S international category referee Igor Ligay addressed refereeing issues in Greco-Roman, freestyle and women’s wrestling.
“In modern wrestling, the rules are updated frequently. Every change in the rules directly affects bout tactics, the evaluation of technical actions, the warning and penalty system, and the final result. Therefore, knowing UWW rules is not a formality, but a real necessity.
Today, strong physical preparation alone is no longer enough for an athlete. Both the coach and the wrestler must clearly understand which actions are awarded points during a bout, in which situations a warning is given, and when a challenge should be used. This is a factor that reduces unnecessary disputes during competitions and has a proper impact on the result.
For this purpose, seminars and practical sessions are being held for national teams during training camps. These sessions explain rule changes and analyze common mistakes and controversial episodes that often occur at competitions. Such work helps reduce misunderstandings between referees and coaches and allows athletes to conduct bouts in a tactically competent way. A team that knows the rules well can make the right decision even at a decisive moment,” said Igor Ligay.
